The stores we track list 110 complete kendamas (ken and tama) in stock under $50 from 8 brands, $17.99 to $49.99, with a median of $35. For a first one, the Japan Kendama Association suggests "a more basic model rather than a higher priced limited edition" (JKA). We do not review or rank them: the page keeps complete kendamas under $50 from the 13 brands on our starter list and leaves out ken-only, tama-only and mini listings.
Catalog data from . Stock and prices change after that, and an item can sell out at any time.
How does DAMA PIG choose these kendamas?
A kendama is on this list if it is a complete, full-size kendama (ken and tama), costs less than $50, and comes from one of the 13 brands on our starter list; listings that sell only a ken or only a tama, and mini sizes, are left out. 87 of the 197 complete kendamas in stock under $50 are on no starter-list brand and are not shown here. The list is not a ranking by quality. 110 are in stock and 787 sold out; in-stock kendamas come first, sold-out ones last in each price group, and within a group brands take turns so one brand's colorways do not fill the top. DAMA PIG sells no kendamas: each card links to the shop that does (about DAMA PIG). There are no affiliate links, and DAMA PIG earns nothing when you buy; buy links add a ref=damapig tag only so the shop can see the visit came from here.
In stock by brand: KROM Kendama 33, Kendama USA 30, Sweets Kendamas 14, Mugen Musou 12, OKendama 9, One Kendama 7, Gloken 3, Kendama Depot 2.
How much should a beginner spend on a kendama?
Sweets says you can "shred just as hard on a $20 kendama as you can on a $50 one" (Sweets kendama buyer's guide). 110 kendamas are in stock under $50, with a median of $35. 25 cost under $30, from $17.99.
| Price | In stock | Lowest price |
|---|---|---|
| Under $25 | 8 | $17.99 |
| $25 to $40 | 70 | $29 |
| Over $40 | 32 | $41 |

The Japan Kendama Association says a new kendama "will get dents and scratches and on occasion even chip the paint," and calls that part of breaking it in (JKA, where to start).
What paint should a first kendama have?
Sweets says "don't worry too much" about extras like paint type when you buy a first kendama, and that these "aren't crucial to learning kendama in the early stages" (Sweets kendama buyer's guide).
Of the 110 kendamas in stock, the listings show: 24 sticky, 11 anti-skid, 8 silk, 8 matte, 8 bare wood, 9 other, 42 not listed. Paint is read from each listing. "Not listed" means the listing names no paint. "Other" means it names a paint or a natty part that fits none of the other groups.
8 of them are bare wood. Sweets says playing a natty kendama "can be extremely difficult" (Sweets kendama buyer's guide).
What the finishes mean for a first kendama:
- Sticky: good for beginners, loses some stick over time.
- Anti-skid: beginner friendly; super sticky but loses stick over time.
- Silk: not beginner friendly; smoother finish.
- Natty (bare wood): not beginner friendly; raw/natural wood, breaks in over time.
We rate silk low on stickiness. KUSA's Kaizen Half Split Green & Black listing says otherwise: "Our KUSA Silk paint is grippy."
Do the wood and a tracking pattern matter for a first kendama?
19 of the 110 kendamas in stock have a tracking pattern on the tama. Tracking pattern: easier to see which way tama is flipping.
Only 32 of the 110 name the tama wood, and 11 of those are beech. For the ken, 47 name the wood and 34 of those are beech. Beech: the #1 choice for tamas. JKA standard wood. Breaks in quickly for great stall development.
What size kendama should a kid start with?
The Japan Kendama Association suggests a "junior" size kendama, about 30% smaller than a standard one, for younger players or smaller hands, then stepping up to full size as you improve (JKA, where to start). Sweets says its boxes say ages 7 and up, "but in reality, there is no limit" (Sweets kendama buyer's guide).
We do not record kendama size yet, so this list cannot show junior sizes.
Where can I buy a beginner kendama that is in stock?
Tap a card to open its DAMA PIG page, which links to the shop selling it. For shops and the countries they ship from, see where to buy kendamas online, and the brand directory lists every brand we track.
How do I find out when a kendama is back in stock?
Tap the bell on a card to get an alert when that kendama is back in stock. The drops page shows restocks and new colorways, and you can manage your alerts at any time.
